(Rumor) Oracle: Major layoffs are to come in January 2009
According to rumors from different sources: “There were several layoffs reported between November - December, 2008 in Oracle’s North America consulting unit. The reduction in force included 140 IT consultants specializing in Siebel, E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, J.D. Edwards, and Hyperion products.”
Rumor: “A bunch of people were laid off from Oracle’s business units including utility and retail. Major layoffs are to come in Jan 2009″.
Rumor: “at least 2 people were laid off from PeopleSoft/Oracle unit with no warning.”
Rumor: “20% of the Education staff was let go”.
Update: According to Dow Jones and CNNMoney: “Oracle Corp.’s (NASDAQ: ORCL) fiscal second-quarter net income fell slightly, with the stronger dollar dragging on revenue and profitability.
Revenue for the quarter was lower than Wall Street expected, reflecting both the currency impact and weaker information-technology expenditure, but cost control and a strong flow of maintenance support revenue helped Oracle hit its quarterly earnings per share guidance.”
Update 2 (1-09-2009): According to rumors:
- SAP layoffs: “A source reports that SAP is making some deep cuts in SAP’s Strategic Growth Enterprise (SGE) unit (focused on the SMB space). A 300 sales-related positions were affected in North America.”
- Infor layoffs: A source reports that “Infor just laid off a staggering 85% of their senior managers and executives across UK and Europe.”
Update 3 (1-11-2009):
- India’s Oracle office in Bangalore lays off 40 people, according to The Time of India.
- Oracle India has an extensive network of more than 400 channel and alliance partners in India, which includes Infosys, Satyam, Sonata, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro.
Update 4 (1-12-2009):
- Reports said that after the acquisition of i-Flex, Oracle was planning to lay off almost all employees of that company, though the decision was scrapped after intervention of Oracle’s management, as the layoff of all i-Flex employees could project a failure of the acquisition, according to rumor
Update 5 (1-13-2009):
- An anonymous report suggests that termination packages were sent out to folks on 1/9/2009 in the US.
- PCWorld mentioned LayoffBlog.com in their Oracle layoff-related article.
- ComputerWorld also mentioned LayoffBlog.com.
Update 6 (1-13-2009):
- Oracle cut around 500 positions in its North American sales and consulting businesses last Friday (January 9, 2009), according to WSJ and other sources.
- Investors had anticipated a larger scale of the job cuts thanks to the rumors last week that the company was aiming to eliminate thousands of its employees, according to Yahoo Finance
- Oracle employed 86,657 globally at the end of November.
Update 7 (7-2-2009):

Major Layoffs around April 17th.
We have many gossips. Based on what you are telling everyone 04/17? Still a few weeks away!
I guess, it is the way orcl functions, the mgrs get absolute powers to fire for no reason as everyone has to sign at will employment.
It is a good company to work for as long as you are on the right side of the fence.
Hello thr,
I just want to know how the Oracle retail in Bangalore is doing?
I just got an offer letter this week to join there, please advise wheather i should join or not?
thanks
I am working in some other division for Oracle in Bangalore itself. I didnt hear anything about layoffs from my friends in retail division. I think Oracle wont see
much of a layoff in India as compared to US. I think you should be fine there.
Thanks a lot for your valuable reply
dont join …better for u
Hi amit,
how long it took for u to get offer letter from oracle ?
Hi,
It took nearly about 2+ months to get the offer letter for Oracle.
HI amit…u have joined oracle retail..so u might be of some help….am in a great confusion state….. am a .Net developer. but a strange thing happened with me is that i got recruited by oracle bangalore for retail applications. i am recruited for a particular project in .Net platform for one of the product of oracle retail and now finally after a month i got my offer with a significant hike. but am not sure whether to join oracle or not. I’m aware that oracle is biggest microsoft competitor and never work for .Net technology. now my doubt is that since i am a .Net resource and am not sure as to what will happen to me after this project? would i be laid off, as they dont have any more .Net project or they’ll re-skill me….or really they have anymore .Net projects??? please help as soon as possible….
Besides laying off lower rank staffs, top management may wish to relook at some of the senior management. There is one which i feel no one support his decision. For those in this LOB, they will know who… BB
any news for EMEA ? Guess nothing ! … no layoffs … for timebeing atleast ….
Nothing is happening, all are giving astrology dates here.
Oracle US hiring — I see 300+ jobs in iRecruitement for the US. RGBU has several openings, including:
Consulting Project Director
Principal Consultant
QA Analyst 2-ProdDev
Software Development Snr Manager
System Administrator 3-IT
I do know there have been about 130 layoffs in RGBU — maybe it is a way to get rid of dead wood?
There are lots of open reqs and job postings. None of them are moving through the pipeline that I know of.
rumour that an OD centre in APAC moving to a cheaper country in FY10? true?
Heard rumours about moving OD SG to PH in new FY. Did anyone hear this?
Oracle Italy is going to cut about 60 jobs on a total of about 1.100 employees.
Oracle offers a variable package.
#2682, Congratulations to you guys in Italy in raising the bar and achieving the first strike in Oracle’s history.
It is possible World wide to spend more time and more money to have voluntary leave only RIF.
Let’s try to build a new momentum of employee representatives, like, for example, IBM employees http://www.endicottalliance.org/
Is there a strike in Italy ? That’s amazing!!!! Can you elaborate?
Only strike I know in Itlay is a Earthquake, happened this morning !
How is Oracle UK doing btw?
NY
Today I heard that 20% (about 2000 people) of the North America Sales Organization at Oracle (rolling up through Keith Block) were going to be laid off at the end of the Fiscal Year. Can anyone confirm or discount this rumor?
Friday, APRIL 11th 2009 will bring another round of LAYOFFS at Oracle. rumored to be 10% reduction.
Is Oracle Calendar really that bad?
Hahaha, Friday April 11 doesn’t exist
Mark my words n just wait for this week. It’s going to be a bloodbath across oracle. Sales people u shd quit already, consultants shd get billable asap n product shd show some creativness. Otherwise God bless you all.
Yep it is true. I see dead people already
oh oh ….come on. Don’t give irresponsible info. There were astrology dates for bloodshed every Friday. But it never happed. So…..
Number 2979 sounds like someone who is trying to scare people just so they quit. Then the headcount comes down and maybe he/she won’t get laid off if/when true layoffs come.
I have found it you do your job well and don’t upset the management too much, Oracle is a good place to work. If you are always complaining about something and slack off, then you reap what you sow. Of course, there are always exceptions, but I would trust in that.
Our time is probably better spent keeping up with the goings on outside of Oracle rather than inside.
major bloodbath coming at the end of this month, on the anniversary of a three-letter acquisition
NA Consulting around 90 folks (out of 570) on Bench are marked as 15th Apr 09 for End Date !!!
Yups starting 17th April.
This one is going to be brutal and all across consulting, support not sure of development.
Oracle is fine. Do not worry about lay offs. People are just speculating here.
sure, oracle is fine. it’s a massive, if grossly inefficient, money-making machine.
that doesn’t mean there won’t me massive layoffs in the coming weeks
no layoffs. alright. since someone passed this URL i am tempted to look over..But find 2 much scepticism and distracting at that.
Best is put your heads to good work..seriously! anyways if layoffs happen they will happen and choices are limited. this is the best you have so do the best at it right now.
well wisher!
Ok — given todays event do you stil feel the same way?
Mainly professional services.
Is this in North America?
Another week, another Friday at layoffblog. Should be quiet this time since it’s a Good Friday.
I heard that after bonuses come out at the end of April the hammer will come down right behind.
I have unexpected meeting with my manager on Wednesday. I think that this is the end of the ‘Oracle’ road for me.
waiting, sorry to hear that. just remember, there are other roads out there. good luck.
I too have a meeting with my boss on 15th… which group are you in…
BPM Delivery, NE
Mississauga Office
I got the same deal and the same feeling
I am in the queue too.
There is a strong rumor of massive layoffs on the 15th in the US.
I did hear about the calls from Manager to couple of consultants. Looks like something big for this wednesday.
I agree.. I also heard about this.. at least 90 in NAC.
Same thing from the Platform consulting group this Wednesday
Told to expect a nine am call from the boss tomorrow. Just me no one else. No wonder what that means.
Same here, i have got the similar call tomorrow. I have got a mixed feeling.
OK, my time is really up. But I was expecting it. Good luck guys
I’m sorry to hear about these bad signs, get your personal belongings ready just in case…
+ i would start backing up my stuff at my pocket usb flash drive if i be you.
Total number is 9 in TUGBU (Tax and Utility) Global Business Unit. 7 in Tax and 2 in Utilities.
from what department? sales? professional services?
I already did.
I heard as 11 from my team
The internal employee count reads very similar, so you’re saying they silently lay off a thousand one month, and buy another company with a thousand employees to hide it? Right, so *that’s* why they constantly buy so many companies…
Get real.
I agree with your statement, in general. The few exceptions are:
1. Aria does not keep track of contractor count - Oracle could layoff 1000 contractors and you would not notice. Technically it is not a layoff. It is just a non renewal of the contract - but still it effectively is a job loss. I know for sure that some departments mentioned here have lost major headcounts silently (simply because I dont see those people any more). Once I realized that contractors are not counted, I think they were all contractors (full time employees have nothing to worry - for now)
2. Occasionally there are glitches in aria where people are orphaned. These orphans do not roll up to the total headcount. This is very rare, but I have seen at least one case.
3. The higher ups are not mandated to keep aria updated. What prevents them from keeping aria out of date for 3-4 months?
Does anyone know oracle HR policy for h1b layoff?
I heard a rumor that they are planning to layoff all those who browse this website (using Oracle owned machines). Is that true?
Yes it is. I’m gone as of today.
LOL! That is ABSOLUTELY the way things happen at Oracle. Or the decision is made at the top NOT to decide (like a pocket veto) and the teams that execute have a choice: go ahead with un-approved plans or forget about the whole thing (guess what happens to managers who opt for the former?). Having said that, college recruiting has always been near and dear to LJE’s heart; maybe it’s repentance for having publicly lied about getting a degree from U of Chicago.
I know one of my friend doesn’t even know about this site.. got laid off today
I just finish a shor talk with my Oracle Director I am gone layoff
Hi all,
This is sad ,but true that Today early morning ,I too got call from my manager about the pinkslip. I am from NAC .and today is my last day at oracle.
does any one know here of what will happen to my H1b status ? what immediate steps i need to do to retain my work permit in USA?
wish you all best of luck !!!
JFL what Division are you in?
Iam fron NAC got a 3 minutes talk with my director and 2 Hours later fedex was knocking my home door. Employee by oracle for 2 years.
not.I am on the unemployment list as of today 04/15/2009. JFL. Thanks Larry.
I was let go today, the only one in my group. It was a great 6 years and I will always have fond memories. God speed to all.
no longer, I’m gone from Oracle as of today, April 15th.
Layoff happening at the Oracle Support Center today. Too bad. These are people with many years of experience. I guess they’ll be twicely replaced in India or China, minus the experience of course.
Support is getting hit today!!! I’m also gone after 10 yrs. been fun but time to do something different.
I was let go today..April 15 from NAC (Siebel Practice)
I’m not sure how many of my group, but I also got notice today. Does any one know if we will receive WARN Act period pay?? My bosses boss didn’t know what it was.
Good luck to all of us! I’m sure we’ll all find something good!
Yep, another one here from consulting group - west coast.
I was also let go this morning… In at 8:00 out at 8:05. West Coast consulting.
3474, My guess is that WARN period pay is not applicable in this case. In the US, WARN is required when over 50 people are terminated at a single location. Pretty easy for the company to keep that under the radar by keeping under that threshold. Severance is apparently slightly better than the usual 2 weeks for 1st year, 1 week for each year worked. I’m waiting for the overnight delivery myself. Time for something new!!
I am one of them.. Bonus was too low.. waiting to see the severance package to survive few months..
I got 22 weeks of pay and benefits calculated based on the date when Oracle bought PSoft. I think this is OK. I have enough time to look after something else.
Oracle Canada
how long were you with Oracle+Psoft? Because I think Oracle’s policy for severence is 1 week per year.
I joined PSoft in July 2000
i got laid off too! Services East Coast! pretty shabby way - 8:01 - got the call, was read some script; 10:05 fedex drops me a pkg from oracle and 12:04 no more access to internal vpn sh*thole.
well at least i don’t have to deal with an out of control spiteful old bipolor woman for senior manager or a spineless weak yes’mam direct manager who likes to hear herself talk any longer.
I may not get a paycheck in a few weeks but at least i can get some sleep and not deal with the micromanaging - backstabbing management team when I wake up
OMG - I may actually be fun and smile again
There is life after Oracle! I’m doing just fine, no longer pulling out my hair and having to deal with an incompetent manager as well. I’m the boss now. So hang in there. You’re from Orlando, aren’t you?
No actually I’m not from Orlando at all. However, the Senior Manager used to live there - but lives in PA now. You know about 58-60, the one that drinks a lot during dinners, says stupid things like “obama is one of them, you know a terrorist” and actually gets away with it? Ummm yea-can you say ignorant? and many more words come to mind, but she’s too fugly for me to think about my happy day of pink slip and the ability to actually sleep peacefully just elates me to no end!
Did any of you that got separated from the payroll had any advance notice…like bad performance review, or being underutilized if you were a consultant? It seems from the previous posting that to some, it came as a complete surprise.
anybody from development division - either server or application?
Is this focused on Consulting? Or is Support also impacted? Any Development teams touched?
Support IS affected.
Anybody have good info if there will be more this Friday April 17? any sales?
Support is getting hit!
