Guys, I've posted some details on The Daily Anchor... 1,400 were already let go today and 3,600 will be let go over the next 18 months, but Balmer says Microsoft will still fill some new positions, and that net headcount over 18 months will be down only 2,000-3,000. This isn't rumor, this is confirmed in Ballmer's email to all employees and Microsoft's official press release.

The rumored layoffs that are coming to Microsoft, although bad, don't seem to be too out of step with other layoffs that have happened to similar companies, like Sony. Hopefully the economy turns around before more of these types of layoffs occur - it is always saddening to hear stories of families out of work.

Writing in from Redmond, WA.
There is a ton of news about this rumor, but absolutely no wors from management about it. We were told just a few weeks ago that the company would not use layoffs to cut staff, but rather slow hiring and let natural attrition lower the numbers. This rumor has been nothing but pure speculation, and news agencies are simply feeding the fire by replaying it. So, again, I'm just a engineer at MS, but to this day, the only place I've heard anything about layoffs has been on the internet rumor mill.
