California may lay off 10,000 state workers
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s administration warned Tuesday that it is preparing to lay off 10,000 state employees if an agreement to close California’s yawning budget deficit isn’t reached by the end of the week.
Administration spokesman Aaron McLear said officials will send out layoff notices Friday absent a budget deal, with the goal of slashing roughly 10 percent of the 100,000 positions paid for by the state’s general operating fund. That would save an estimated $750 million through mid-2010; California faces a $40 billion budget gap over that period.

Update (2-18-2009): California state workers layoff process begins

This is the consequence of choosing an actor to be the governor
This has nothing to do with Arnold. California was in a budget crunch before this recession even started, which means by now we are much worse off then everyone else. We just have to work through this.
#1: He is better than the recalled one, IMO
#3 And certainly stronger!
#4: Everybody probably saw “Commando”, “Conan the Barbarian”, “True Lies”.. So it’s a bad idea to mess with this guy
“This has nothing to do with Arnold. California was in a budget crunch before this recession even started”
But he was onboard long before the recession !
He sould start to Terminate ……some projects, some contracts …even some people …
calif is doomed. and All the idiots in Sac. can do is Raise taxes…that makes perfect sense.. just keep sucking money out of the already straped Calif Tax payers..ever hear of cutting expenses…state and federal Government is already way to LARGE
this is BS
It’s either raising taxes or closing schools, prisons, parks, police stations, fire stations, libraries and and a bunch of other things we have become accustomed to.
I’d vote for to start with cutting cops paid overtimes first.
Maybe it is time to cut all the Social fluff in Calif…”I think i will have 14 babies on the state”….
And by the way Just how many pensions can California Support
I left California 4 years ago. Why? I saw this collapse coming. Real Estate through the roof, tax payers supporting millions of illegals, an anti-business government. California is one of the worst states to operate a business in. Good ridence to the 20,000 gummint workers. The number should be higher. Most are lazy, overpaid, over subsidized through their ridiculous benefits and retirement packages and should be at job risk like any other “employee”. Time to run government like a business instead of the over bloated charity it is. All governments should be laying off employees, whether it is city, county, state and especially federal.
Notice Arnold hasn’t mentioned booting bums off the dole…..just raise taxes on the hard working tax payers. Crazy…just like a fox.
f*** legilative, arnold, and everbody else who can’t get the s*** right!!!!!!
[...] (New) California Mass Layoffs [update: 2-19-2009: news, comments, discussion thread] [...]
Some wrote in our newspaper “instead of closing down the DMVs for 2 days a month, why not operate them for one less hour a day?” Better yet, why not start with cutting 1 hour from every state employee?
Look at this $ being spent too……did anyone try to do any real detailed research? http://layoffblog.com/2009/02/18/jobless-phone-calls-cost-california-millions-of-dollars/
California has long wanted it all. Low taxes. Great schools. Fine human services. Filled prisons. Housing as a fail safe and fool proof investment. Just to keep our selves honest we elected 2 Hollywood actors as or Great Leader. Woe to then kill Sacred Cows. A curse upon them that raises taxes. Any energy saving supply plant is not for my back yard.

The state and any government is not a business and can not be managed as one
Travis, the state and the government should be accountable like a business. Why shouldn’t they be more frugal in these times like all businesses?
