what’s going to happen to mysql, I wonder
PostgreSQL is still out there, in case of sh*t hit the fan
True, but migrating all mysql-based stuff would be a major pain. Hopefully Larry is after the hardware mostly.
It’ll be a gold rush for DB migration engineers
Welcome to the dark side to all Sun Employees…. To start I’ll cut 10K this summer…

Thanks for the link, Larry!

I mourn the demise of open source software as we know it. Apart from MySQL, wonder what happens to OpenOffice?
Why would they axe OpenOffice? It’s somewhat of a pain in Microsoft’s neck and doesn’t compete with anything Oracle’s.
Are you mourning the death of Linux and InnoDB yet? You open source fanboys think that Linux has a decent share in the Server OS market because of a bunch of hackers. If companies like IBM and Oracle hadn’t adopted Linux, it’s market share would be the same as that in the Desktop market.
well if not for hackers there would be no Linux. IBM certainly helped but they certainly didn’t _create_ it.
OpenOffice may attract Google or Adobe, but not Oracle, even during their shopping spree.

Have a look at this El Reg article
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/04/23/oracle_sun_town_hall/
“Asked specifically about the future of OpenOffice by one Sun employee, Phillips said he couldn’t comment on any product line or set but noted it’s something Oracle will be examining. Sun is the largest contributor to OpenOffice.org and has made a principle of using the suite as its corporate standard for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
With an email and productivity offering of its own - and given OpenOffice lags Microsoft Office by years - the omens for OpenOffice are not good, even though - Schwartz claimed - “the point’s not lost on Oracle we are adding three million users a week.”
As typical of a Company run by penny-pinching Jewish shysters, (Ellison, Catz et all), It is doubtful if the big Red will continue pouring money into OO.org’s development, if it does have a commercial revenue potential.
Oracle is going to love Sun’s Sun Ray thin client product. That’s going to be a big win for Oracle.
It will be interesting to see how Oracle capitalizes on that technology. It was relatively neglected
by Sun management for years but has vast potential as a secure client. It has tons of applications.
Sun’s marketing machine was so lousy and revenue model for the group was so bad. Under
leadership with a vision, that could really be a big money-maker for Oracle.
Sun is getting payback for being a SOB. Call it bad karma. It was for years the play ground for geeks, freaks, nerds and young snobs. They thought they were rulers of the universe and there was no other royal order but UNIX and those that did not bow to UNIX were nitwits or just plain lazy. They not only did not like the masses they refuse to think about them. The masses got the message and went where some one cared about their needs and wants. Goodbye Sun you were like an Edsel that no one wanted to buy save other geeks, freaks, nerds and snobs.
@ chance - you logic is crap…”They thought they were rulers of the universe and there was no other royal order but UNIX and those that did not bow to UNIX were nitwits or just plain lazy” - BTW…Pentagon, the oval office, Dept. homeland security…etc all use trusted features of UNIX(Solaris)…and Yes…they are the rulers of the universe from that very aspect….and If not for the geeks, freaks, nerds and snobs in Sun…”The masses” would have been forced to run their banking, telecom, defence…applications on … Microsoft !! ..may be linux… I would like to conclude by saying Sun pioneered in what they did and will remain so…and remember …they came up with the motto “The network is the computer” in 1982 !! - Hope Oracle handles with care…
Oracle acquired BEA, and most of the BEA revenue was deferred till the acquisition was approved by the EU (29th april). Q4`08 results of Oracle shows a growth on revenue and especially with BEA…(In Nasdaq comments)… Sun is doing a warning now…, deferral again?
Look at the USD which Oracle spend since they start to acquire Peoplesoft, is there really much growth? Oracle does not give salary rise with promotion, you need to be happy to work at Oracle and many (old Oracle staff) are saying, did not get salary rise for the last 10 years, so i work 20% less hard…Company is very bureacratic and do not use there own systems (Microsoft excel:).
My advise to the SUN staff get the package and get out there (if you can afford). Many many frustrated employees from ex-acquistions AND classic Oracle employees…
Now we know Oracle is buying Sun. How does it bode for Sun employees especially those in sparc/HW divisions ? Is Oracle really interested in R&D investment on Sparc ?
Are there any links to Oracle acquisition process - do they usually mail out letters informing ppl if they are fired or not ?
