Cisco Lays Off Several Hundred Workers
Cisco Systems Inc. laid off several hundred employees on Thursday, as the company tries to control its costs amid declining sales.
Between 600 and 700 people were laid off at the company’s San Jose headquarters, according to a person familiar with the decision.

they bring in choice hires who are funded by the company and then the BUs would throw them out after one year as they are not free to the BU any more and would keep on getting more choice hires…….what an excellent example of being unfair

Having been at cisco, I am not sure where cisco is going as a company. It doesn’t want to focus on its main products like routers and switches. It wants to focus on media products and all the media components like processor/ chips are brought from another company. So , its basically doing only integration work. I could be wrong, but just an opinion.
I heard that there may be another round of layoffs (around 5% of CDO may be impacted) in December .. Is it true ??

I have worked in many companies but Cisco is the worst of all.. If you are
a woman, you get treated very bad. No promotion or salary increase. My boss
who happen to be an Indian, always disrespect me and question my work. I like
to complain to HR but I am worried he will come after me in my performance
review. Not sure what to do! (Boxboro Location)

Mary, don’t complain to HR. It’s no use. A co-worker of mine went to HR to complain about his manager. He even got an offer to transfer to another group in Cisco. His lady Indian manager somehow convinced the Director to handle everything. Even though HR gave him all this crap about VP approval to transfer, nothing ever got passed the Director. His transfer was stopped, stayed to suffer through fake performance improvement nonsense (very vague things that were impossible to accomplish), and then let go as bottom 5%. My advice to you is to NOT do anything and start looking for another job internally or externally.
Or make your boss likes you. Start kiss his/her ass. I see a lot of people get promotion/salary increase if they do that, even they are just doing a mediocre job.

I have worked with different companies and interacted with people from different regions of the world. Be it Indian, American, European OR Japanese. And every region of the world have both good and bad guys.
Sometimes cultural differences cause misunderstandings between 2 good people too.
There is a classic example that my very first manager told me.
Indians usually say “I have a doubt” in place of “I have a query” for asking a question. But German guy may take it offending way because they feel that the counterpart is suspecting him, even though it was not intentional.
Every culture is unique and its important to understand the culture before u interact with the people of that culture.
I followed the advice from my manager and I had wonderful and healthy interactions with my German colleagues in my previous company.
It seems to me that you and your manager’s chemistry do not match for some reason.
Try to patch up and if it does not work, better move on silenty, world is full of exciting opportunities.

Nothing you can do, if you can find few more people file a complain to the same manager, that’s a different case.
Quit is your only option. In my case the HR guy is an Indian. HR does not the staff. Their so called “investigation” amounts to interviewing the same managers. The director’s excuse is, he has too many people.
I am an Indian, and have seen tons of Indian managers in Cisco who are rude and disrespectful. The pitiful fact is these idiots have been in this country for more than 15 years and gave not grown up to this country’s culture. These managers think themselves to be dictators. You will notice that most of these a-holes have done all their schooling in India and have worked for sometime in some company in India before moving to the USA. I would be surprised to hear of any Indian manager who did get some education in this country behaving in this same rude manner.

I once met a similar senior manager over a job position. He had a hard time even browsing the web as he was trying to show me his group’s site…
You should be aware of all IT is outsouced to India now and they don’t even know how to resolve most issues we are having today. I have one alliance case open for 3 months without resolution but the local IT guy took 2 hrs to fix it for me. Some BU that I’m aware even move all their H/W support back to Bangalore for some teams who have no clue every time there is linestop come up in the factory…what the heck…not sure what the BUs were thinking about this move…this company is going backward…

RTP has over 80% white. SJ knows RTP hides project/people but no one wanted to take actions about. When Protor visited Richardson campus in 2009 he publicly talked about it. RTP needs to be cleaned up, especially Frank B.’s group. Frank stole the SBC project from SJ and put all his bodies that were laid off by other groups on it. Don’t know how long they can do it?
No offense to any Indian folks here…but I would agree that most Indian managers with this company know only how to talk simply they can speak fluently in English and full of BS playing politics. If you ask them to do the work like being hands on then they will quickly pass the ball to someone else like a soccer player. Every Indian I talked in this company only want to do only the talking not the real work which they supposed to do…is so obvious that manufacturing job mostly can be outsourced to China instead of India as you can see today..I understand how you guys feel if your manager is an Indian who talks very high level BS daily without helping you grow in your career..Good luck.
Why wouldn’t Americans (i.e., John and his cohorts) qualify under the same clause? They are shipping everything out of the country to be done cheap, collect a finished product — make some videos claiming they were the brains behind the product and sell it for $$$.
All the manufacturing work is being shipped to China. Cisco is more bullish on China than any other country(incl. the US)

You are right! These (Indian) managers are all about politics. They think
they are in India and they are making a deal in a local Market. There is this Indian
guy who has the lowest performance record in our group, but he is a
personal friend of my manager, and now he is “untouchable”. They laid off some
white guy who was performing much better than this Indian guy, just because my
Indian manager ptotected his “social bud” ( and we have 5 of those guys in or group).
If you look under most of Engineering BU’s, you will
see Manager after Manager who are Indians. Is it because they are smarter or
are they better politicians or BS’ers than the rest…. What would John Chambers say
if we expose these guys? Is John C as corrupted as his VP’s and Senior Managers….
Lets put it this way, Cisco is hijacked by the Indian Mafia. They have control of
the whole company and if you do not play the same game as they do, you will be out!!!

Actually, there _was_ a shortage of high-skilled workers (and always will be, because most people are dumb) and the first shipments of Indians were really good because the American companies could select the best of the best from the untapped job pool. Initially that created a false impression that “all Indians are great software engineers/doctors/whatever”. Alas, the IQ distribution is roughly the same among all nationalities, so once the crème de la crème was exhausted, the “average” and then “below average” people began to appear. The rest is history
A friend of mine has a personal conspiracy theory that Bill Gates’ (and others) humanitarian efforts in Africa have the goal of tapping into yet another job pool. No matter how smart someone is, he won’t be of any help in writing Office 2030 if he never learns how to read or even dies of malaria. It seems u just forgot that India is world’s largest democracy. And everyone is proud of it. India is the most diverse in terms of its citizen’s religion, caste, language. Still India stand united and India rocks!

When given the choice of paying experienced American workers the prevailing wage or hiring cheap foreign workers, they (the govt and corporations) made up this so-called worker shortage to create the H1B program. This country never was and never will be short of qualified workers in any field. The only thing that American workers are guilty of, is refusing to be exploited by corporations making billions of dollars off our backs. We refuse to live with 20 other people in one house, and we wont live in our own filth.

The foreigners I know who work in IT make $120-$150K, which is in what, top 5% in this country? So I’m not sure what exactly do you mean by “cheap foreign workers” - are you confusing us with the Mexicans hanging around your local Home Depot? As for “never will be short of qualified workers in any field” - that’s not possible even if most American children were considering science to be cool (alas, they don’t). 3) Constant lairs. Almost all Indian IT engineer’s resume have “extreme” inflation. I worked with many recruiters for job hunting before, all Indian recruiters (yes, all, no exception) cheat their clients by fake my experience and offer me the answer for pre-assessment test. no other race recruiter did this. They never be shame of cheating.
This is not based on just a few Indains I know. I have worked with over a hundred Indians, although a few of them are excellent , but Indian as community are, one word, “stink”, not because of your curry, or your color or your accent, but because of your behaviors.
Wake up, blaming JC or white American or Chinese will not change your image in other people’s mind. If you want to prove that I am wrong, starting with yourself, let me have a chance to know next 10 Indian who do not “stink”

I have noting against Indians and as a matter of fact, I have made lot of friends
from India while working at Cisco. My beef is with the Indian managers who play
lots of politics in Cisco. I would say to play it fair… If you send jobs
overseas, then tax those jobs so companies think twice before sending jobs.
Hire and promote who deserve it and not because you just spent a birthday
party at each other house. This comes back to the discussion as why they
are so many Indians work under Indian managers and why so many Indian managers
working for other Indian managers. If you guys do not admit there is some sort
of favoritism going on in Cisco, then Indian as community will get bashed through
these public forums. I do not care Indians love to eat curry, 3 families live
together in a small house or 99% percent of them drive Japanese cars… I do not care

was that his boss was too fat-dumb & happy to care about what my manager was doing and so I would blame the white guy

I thought the local salary only given for the first year if you are approved/allowed to move from US to another country for a same/different job. If that’s the case then I’m sure all “to-be” laid off Indian will choose to join Cisco India for US $$ Salary, who wouldn’t? Shame to John if this option is being offerred to Indian employee here in US..

Several positions let go in RTP, NC area, contract and FTE last week. Sad.
Cisco will continue to layoff people every Quarter till economy is back what it
was before. Cisco has perfect excuse to layoff folks in US and move the
jobs to India, don’t you guys get it? Just look at pathfinder, you do not
find too many Software Engineering positions but you see lot of customer
and Sales related jobs. So for the guys in Engineering, your job will be
eliminated soon or later (unless the economy picks up again and Cisco
makes BIG profits. But for now, Cisco will silently layoff Engineers and
move the jobs overseas.
No surprise seeing more hiring in India than US. There are openings for India you won’t find in pathfinder simply because Cisco lets their “vendors” to do all that locally in India especially Bangalore. At least I found 50 more software/hardware new positions opened last week in India. For us working in US we gotta find others way to survive otherwise we will be soon ended up jobless in the near future..
Are you contacting your Congressional and Senate reps about this outsourcing? Are we resigned to being lambs for the slaughter? This is abhorrent practice by US companies such as Cisco and IBM.

He believes it is not patriotic to earn dollars outside of United States. A lot of projects have been moved-out. I don’t there is much of a future here in Cisco SJ.
I got my pink slip in July’09. All five useless Indians who suck up big time to the manager stayed. The manager is a phony guy like JC. Also, I’ve recently had a phone interview for a position in SJ with an incompetent Indian manager. I could barely understand his English and his stupid questions – no surprise I did not get the job. I am moving on… Good luck all!
It was 2001 when I saw non-indian manager at Cisco SJ last time.
For some of us who were cut back in July, are we going to get our bonuses?
Our last day is Sept 14 and bonus will be paid later this month.
Can we take any legal action against Cisco if they do not pay our bonuses?
(I am not bottom 10% and my EPM is not complete).
I was also on the list in July and my management has confirmed
that we will get our bonuses. Saw an e-mail from our HR rep to
that effect as well.
They will direct deposit as long as you’ve not made any
change to you bank account….if you do talk to payroll.
The people in Georgia (Lawrenceville) office where told by there managment that we were getting our bonuses. What’s up with that,mix signals………..

Rumor is that Cisco is hiring back some laid off American workers. Staff shortage because so many took the early retirement package plus the layoff occurred at the same time.
Anything is possible coming from the headless-chicken-overpaid-underachiever-arrogant-middle-aged-executives over there, especially those “geniuses” from India who are only after their green cards and six-figure salaries.
If there is any open Req, then Cisco will fill up those spots with the laid off workers. But that is
like 3-4 jobs for every 500 lost. It is life out there, my advice is to leave Cisco and
screw the company who DOES NOT understand employee loyalty. What do you expect from
a company who runs by Indians. They are here to screw the rest of us. Maybe you can trust
your fellow Indian worker, but never trust the Indian Managers.
My experience is: If you have an Indian manager (Any Indian manager), you will never, ever, be able to compete with your Indian Colleague, no matter how well you do and how hard you work.
Best for you to do now is, get yourself laid off, take the 6 month “bonus” before they can still pay it, and leave this moron operated company.
Does not look like any ex-employees who did not get their EPM completed
by their managers will get any bonuses from Cisco. Managers took
their time by not completing the EPM, so they have a good excuse to put
these employees buttom 10 with out these employees knowledge ..

It is confirmed. If you suppose to get your bonus, you should have got
a letter by now.. What Cisco has done is as follows, they pre-planned the
whole thing. They did not complete the EPM on time so they can leave
a door open to justify why the effected employees did not get their
bonuses. For those people who are not getting their bonus, it is pure simple,
you were ranked bottom 10% with out you knowing.. This is pure crap company
I can tell you why this company sucks so much. They fired all of us, but
then they gave each other bonuses. I assume Managers and Directors get about
20-30k Bonus each, would’t it better to not give the managers bonus and
save one job? Doesn’t Cisco gave up the water bottles, travel cost
and VPN costs to cut down expenses? So why is the managers (mostly Indians)
are getting their bonuses and lot of good people lost their jobs.. The answer
is pretty simple, Cisco Sucks. I wish I never worked in that company and I did not
waste over 10 years working hard for a company who treats their employees like this.
I am going to write to my state rep and Department of Labor. Please do the

the state here in Bangalore, India is totally the opposite..We have an awesome campus with awesome facilities, we work for only 4 hours a day, download movies all day and we get awesome salaries and perks because “cisco wants to hire the best talent in India”..

Typical or non-typical Indian doesn’t make any difference anymore since thousand years ago. They are all selfish, stupid (but they still think they are the smartest), useless (look at what India today, what can they contribute to the world, couldn’t even do any good to themselves), and finally but not least they are brainless.
For those Indian manager they think they are the smartest, earning a lot of money (how much, 1M per year? so what), most obvious you will see them is only knows how to TALK but never get themselves assigned on any action at all, very good in passing the ball. The way they work is terrible, they will work with you by talking the entire day. Don’t expect they will do more than expected but they will talk more than what you want to listen.
Why Cisco hired so many of them? The answer is easy. They all talked very well during their interviews using their “INglish” and know how to bring their own friends in from India. Hope this company is still growing like population in India but I don’t it’s a good idea for an employee or manager to grow and get promoted by only Kissing each other asses. While it’s very possible there will be more LRs, I dont think any new laid off people will fair as badly as past ones. There is a marked increase in internal job postings and they are not all going to Bangalore. So, if you’re not a bottom-feeder and you get notice, you may have a decent chance of picking up something in another group. It all depends on how big the LR is. The smaller the LR, the better chance you have of staying. Word is that more people took the ER package then was planned for. That means more job openings. I get the impression that the big layoffs are over. We’ll always see LRs and always have. Get training and make yourself more valuable to them and maybe you’ll be ok.
If you do not have a good relationship with an Indian manager (another word,
if you do not kiss up to them), expect to be on the layoff list in the next
round.. but have a little proud and stand up to these clueless Indian managers.

Cisco laidoff people, cut down in so much expenses and most probably
will continue to do layoff, but then you see these big bonuses.. Forget
about JC, how about all those VP’s+Directors,2nd level managers…

Directors and above were getting at least 20% for their bonus and RSU this time, it doesn’t matter how their EPM looks like. Even for the 1st or 2nd line managers are doing pretty good if their direct reports of Director or VP likes them. All about politics in this company, so really no surprise seeing 14M for Chambers. Some one told me about one Director received 10000 RSU and 35% bonus this year, WTF, but what can we do? Breakroom even cutting down Lipton green tea but giving away a lot of money everywhere among those management group. If you don’t have any good relationship and connection with any Directors or VPs then you have no future working here. No matter how hard you work and you will not get what you deserved to have. The management structure here is so much corrupted and politically polluted. If you read this and if you are currently the director, don’t tell me you are allocating the bonus and EPM rating in a fairly manner, only Idiot will trust that is performance base and not connection base.
I’m one of the Realtors who previously worked for Cisco. Most of my clients are currently working in this company and I can tell you that some of them is able to pay off a 700K home in 2-3 years. Looks like the big bonus really help them a lot and that’s why I quit my job not to waste time with the ridiculous workload and management style.
