Berkshire’s NetJets Eliminates More Than 300 Jobs

NetJets Inc., the unprofitable plane-leasing unit owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., is cutting more than 300 jobs after replacing its chief executive officer.

“Severe economic conditions facing the aviation industry” have reduced demand for flights, Columbus, Ohio-based NetJets said today in an e-mailed statement. Ted Lowen, a spokesman for NetJets, said the cuts could affect as many as 350 employees. The company said the reduction involves about 5 percent of staff, which was about 8,000 at the end of 2008.

Japan Airlines plans to cut over 1,000 jobs through early retirement

American Airlines to layoff 228 flight attendants

American Airlines will layoff 228 flight attendants in October, the company announced Tuesday.
American had warned flight attendants that more than 1,200 could be furloughed as the airline cuts back on flights this fall. But the airline was able to reduce the number of involuntary job reductions.

American Airlines plans to cut up to 23 workers in LAX

American Airlines may cut up to 23 airport services positions at Los Angeles International airport, according to a government notice the company filed in California today.

The workforce reduction is a result of the capacity cuts the Fort Worth-based carrier is making to its fall schedule and had previously announced in June. The notices were sent to 289 workers at LAX that could be affected by the job cuts.

BAE to eliminate 225 local jobs

IMP Aerospace Components of Amherst, N.S. lays off 10 per cent of workforce

Delta eyes more job cuts among salaried workers

British Airways to cut capacity, jobs, delay new planes

British Airways PLC announced Friday it will ground aircraft, slash seat numbers and postpone taking delivery of a dozen new Airbus A380 superjumbos as it faces a recession-driven decline in passengers. British Airways, which employs 40,000 people, is looking to cut 2,000 flight attendants and 1,500 ground workers.

Finnair talks with staff may lead to 1,200 job cuts

Finnish national carrier Finnair Oyj will this week start talks with staff over cost saving plans which could include up to 1,200 job cuts, the company said on Wednesday.

Like other airlines, Finnair has been hit hard in the recession as people fly less. The company has cut capacity and jobs as a result, saying in late April over 6,000 staff were affected by temporary lay-offs alone.

Air France-KLM reports first loss, 2,700 job cuts

Air France-KLM, Europe’s biggest airline, on Tuesday announced losses of 814 million euros (1.1 billion dollars) for the 2008-2009 fiscal year and said it would have to cut 2,700 jobs.

Air France-KLM employs around 104,000 people and has been hit hard by the economic crisis that has affected much of the global airline industry.

India Sends the Foreign Pilots Back Home

India’s airlines, in a slump, are sending the following message to the cockpit: Foreign pilots, go home.

It’s an abrupt turnaround from the past several years, when Western pilots looked to growing markets like India as saviors for their profession. While carriers in the U.S. and Europe struggled with the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, India was opening its skies to new domestic carriers — and hiring hundreds of foreign pilots to fill the new planes with experienced fliers.
