Magna International Inc. plans to cut 10,500 jobs at General Motors Co.’s Opel unit, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported today, citing an unidentified Magna spokesman.
About 4,500 of the total cuts will be in Germany, the newspaper said in an e-mailed summary of an article to be published tomorrow.

Fuel Games, developer of iPhone, PC, online, and console games, told Gamasutra that it is cutting staff and is in the midst of restructuring — right after a venture capital injection.
“Last Thursday about 20 people were laid off from the Ottawa office (out of around 100 people), and reportedly the entire staff was told they would not be receiving their paychecks on Friday,” said an ex-Fuel Games employee who wished to remain anonymous.

Bombardier Inc. will cut 3,000 jobs in its aerospace division because of decreased demand for its business aircraft, the company announced Thursday.
In a news release issued Thursday morning outlining its fourth-quarter results, the Montreal-based company said it expected to deliver about 25 per cent fewer business aircraft this fiscal year and will be cutting its workforce by about 10 per cent.

Canada’s national broadcaster, CBC, announced yesterday that they’re laying off approx 10% of workforce.
The details came a day after CBC president and chief executive Hubert Lacroix announced the public broadcaster would have to cut about 800 full-time positions in total at the CBC/Radio-Canada, as well as selling about $125 million in assets.
CBC English Services plans to cut up to 80 positions from its news division and a further 313 from sports, entertainment, current affairs, sales and support across the country.

Fertilizer producer Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan[, Canada] plans to extend the temporary layoff of 940 workers who were let go in January.
The extended layoffs come one day after Potash said it is reducing its 2009 potash production by an additional 1.5 million tonnes, bringing the total expected cut of its capacity to at least 3.5 million tonnes this year.

Vale Inco Ltd. said Tuesday it will cut more than 400 white-collar jobs in Canada as it continues to restructure its operations amid slumping nickel prices.
The Toronto-based miner said it will cut 900 jobs worldwide, mainly from its corporate, management and business support functions, and the bulk of layoffs in Canada will fall at its major nickel operations in northern Ontario.

U.S. Steel Corp. announced Tuesday that it would further scale back operations, affecting about 1,500 workers.
In the next month, the Pittsburgh-based company (NYSE: X) will idle its finishing and coking operations at Hamilton Works and the steelmaking and finishing operations at Lake Erie Works, both in Ontario. Coking production, the baking of coal to create the steel ingredient coke, will continue at Lake Erie Works, the company said.
U.S. Steel will continue to concentrate production at its Mon Valley Works outside of Pittsburgh; Gary Works in Gary, Ind.; and Fairfield Works near Birmingham, Ala., the company said.

According to Bloomberg: “Nortel Networks Corp. plans to cut 3,200 jobs worldwide, a tenth of the total, as the unprofitable phone-equipment maker works on emerging from bankruptcy protection.
The reductions, in addition to 1,800 announced previously, will occur over the next several months, the Toronto-based company said today in a statement. Nortel also won’t pay any bonuses under its incentive plan for last year.”
According to Reuters, CNBC: “Nortel Networks Corp is working on a “detailed plan” to cut its global workforce as it restructures under bankruptcy protection, and it will seek to avoid holding an annual shareholder meeting because it says it would be distracting and expensive.”
“Ernst & Young Inc, the monitor overseeing Nortel’s bankruptcy protection, said in a court report posted on its website. The monitor’s report confirms that despite slashing its workforce to 30,000 today from about 90,000 in 2000, Nortel — North America’s biggest maker of telephone equipment — still isn’t finished with job cuts as it fights to survive.”

An international mining company Xstrata Nickel today announces plans to restructure its Sudbury [Northern Ontario, Canada] operations in response to ongoing challenging market conditions. As a result of the restructuring, 686 permanent employee positions will be made redundant, affecting both union and salaried employees in operational and non-operational roles. A three-day stoppage of operations was initiated today to allow the restructuring to occur.
The restructuring follows the announcement in November 2008 of the accelerated closure of the end-of-life Craig and Thayer-Lindsley operations at Sudbury, both of which will cease operations with immediate effect.

According to Bloomberg: “Canada lost a record number of jobs in January, pushing the unemployment rate to a four-year high of 7.2 percent, as companies struggle to cope with the country’s first recession since 1992.
Employers cut a net 129,000 workers, three times the loss forecast by economists, after a drop of 20,400 in December, Statistics Canada said today in Ottawa. It was the largest drop since the methodology for the survey was changed in 1976.”
Mosaic Co. (NYSE:MOS), confirmed yesterday it will lay off more than 1,000 workers at its potash mines in Saskatchewan[, Canada] due to slow fertilizer demand, the global credit crisis and growing potash inventories.
The layoffs, which affect about 80% of the total workforce at the two mines, will take effect March 8 at Colonsay and Feb. 15 at Esterhazy. Mosaic employs about 1,500 people in Saskatchewan, including about 250 at its potash mine at Belle Plaine, west of Regina.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty warned on Friday of significant Canadian job losses in 2009 and said he was not ruling anything out as he prepares a stimulus package for a budget that he said would run a large deficit.
“We’re in for a very difficult year,” the Conservative government minister said. “We are going to have substantial job losses. We need to respond to the needs of people who will lose their jobs this year.”
