With hundreds of IBM jobs lost in Dutchess County[,NY] alone this year and persistent and rational worries about more to come in the midst of a recession, a band of activists took to the street corner Wednesday to say Big Blue should think twice.
They rallied a group of about 15 members and supporters to object to what they say IBM has been doing:
• Cutting jobs for Americans.
• Sending work overseas.
• And getting government tax breaks while doing the above.

IBM’s Project Match, would allow laid-off US and Canadian workers to apply for IBM jobs in India and other low-cost countries and would help them with visas and moving costs.
If hired by IBM in a foreign country, employees would work under that country’s terms and conditions, which would mean they would earn a much lower wage than in the United States.

IBM is planning to axe thousands of jobs in Britain, Germany and Ireland as part of a broader move to shift much of its workforce to cheaper outlets in eastern Europe, China, India and South America, the Observer has learned.
IBM workers in India earn an average $5,000 a year, compared with between $50,000 and $80,000 for a similar job in the US.
The expected European job cuts come on top of 5,000 recent layoffs at IBM in America. The US cuts brought the total number of redundancies on IBM’s home turf to around 9,600 for the first three months of the year.

According to Forbes: “When titans collide, blood runs. And as rumors circulated Friday that IBM and Sun Microsystems are inching toward a deal to sell the Silicon Valley computing pioneer to Big Blue for close to $7 billion, IT industry watchers began speculating on how the integration would proceed.”
IBM could lay off as much as a third of Sun’s staff to eliminate redundancies–a total of more than 10,000 employees–or the equivalent in combined Sun and IBM job cuts, according to Forrester Research analyst James Staten.

Weeks after slashing nearly 5,000 jobs, IBM is expected to shift the work of a large number of U.S. workers to IBM employees working in India, the latest example of a successful company that is continuing to slash costs and take advantage of cheap Asian labor, WSJ reported.

Update (March, 25, 2009): IBM to cut 5,000 jobs in U.S: According to Reuters: “The job cuts will account for over 4 percent of IBM’s U.S. workforce, which totaled around 115,000 at the end of 2008. The sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly on the issue, said the cuts will mostly be in IBM’s global services business, which includes outsourcing and consulting services.”
BusinessWeek also reports (”IBM Cuts Jobs As It Seeks Stimulus Money“): “..the company would be cutting high-skill positions domestically as it and others jockey for new business from the $787 billion stimulus package Congress enacted in February”

According to Reuters, Yahoo News: “IBM is in talks to buy Sun Microsystems Inc for at least $6.5 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported, in a deal that could bolster their computer server products against rivals such as Hewlett-Packard Co.
That would translate into a premium of about 100 percent over Sun’s Nasdaq closing price Tuesday of $4.97 a share, the paper said, citing people familiar with the matter.”
“Sun stock is down 71 percent in the last 52 weeks, a far cry from an all-time high of $258.75 that it touched during the dot-com boom. The company — which is shedding up to 6,000 jobs, or 18 percent of its workforce — reported a net loss of $209 million for its second quarter ended December 28, compared with year-earlier net profit of $260 million. Revenue fell 11 percent to $3.22 billion.”

“The Oakland health maintenance organization, which has spent as much as $5 billion over the past five years building up its electronic records system, said Monday it has inked a seven-year deal with IBM to maximize the performance of its data processing units.”
“In a separate action, Kaiser is eliminating an additional 160 information technology jobs scattered across 30 locations as it pares back spending due to the impact of the economic downturn.”
“Of the 700 staffers affected by the IBM deal, 500 work at one of the California data centers, which are located in Pasadena, Corona, Napa, Walnut Creek and Irvine”

The climate is warm, there’s no shortage of exotic food, and the cost of living is rock bottom. That’s IBM’s pitch to the laid-off American workers it’s offering to place in India. The catch: Wages in the country are pennies-on-the-dollar compared to U.S. salaries.
Under a program called Project Match, IBM will help workers laid off from domestic sites obtain travel and visa assistance for countries in which Big Blue has openings. Mostly that’s developing markets like India, China, and Brazil.

According to Lee Conrad, a former IBM employee who is now the national coordinator of Alliance@IBM, about 1,200 employees who work in IBM’s systems technology group at sites around the country have been laid off, and about 200 in the research division were let go as well. These reports bring the total layoff count at IBM to about 4,200.

The center will provide operational support, including maintenance and monitoring of computer hardware and software systems, to IBM clients in the U.S. and around the world.
IBM officials said they selected Dubuque because of the city’s strong reputation as a place that values public-private partnerships.

According to Yahoo Tech: “One message states that IBM will announce 16,000 layoffs on Jan. 23, affecting workers worldwide. Similar predictions are made in other recent posts on the site, which is run by the Alliance@IBM/Communications Workers of America Local 1701, a union that is trying to organize IBM workers.”
“The union, while still in an organizing phase and not yet recognized by IBM, has about 6,000 members, including IBM employees and retirees, according to national coordinator Lee Conrad. But because the union has not reached an employment contract with IBM, there is “not an awful lot” it can do except raise awareness of the issue”.
