Peterbilt plant will close for good

The Peterbilt truck plant in Madison[,TN], which has been shut down since employees were locked out in a labor dispute in June 2008, will close permanently as of Dec. 1, the company said Monday. About 390 workers will lose their jobs, said plant manager Larry Vessels.

Sony announces 35 layoffs

Sony DADC announced it will lay off 35 workers from its Terre Haute, Indiana plant. The business currently employs more than 1,400 workers. The layoffs are scheduled to go into effect on Oct. 1.

ConAgra to lay off 300 at Garner plant damaged by explosion

ConAgra Foods will lay off 300 hourly employees in Garner as a result of diminished production following the June explosion that killed three and injured dozens of others, the company told workers in a meeting Wednesday evening.

The layoffs will take effect in mid-November. In addition to the layoff of 300 workers, the company will also eliminate the jobs of 21 salaried employees. The facility currently employs about 750.

GE To Lay Off 164 at Bloomington Plant

About 164 General Electric workers are losing their jobs at the Bloomington plant.

In late July, GE had announced its decision to cancel a planned plant closure, where 530 people were employed. But now the company says the job cuts, affecting 164 workers, are necessary in response to the downturn economy and lower demand for side-by-side refrigerators.

Magna plans to cut 10,500 Opel jobs

Magna International Inc. plans to cut 10,500 jobs at General Motors Co.’s Opel unit, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported today, citing an unidentified Magna spokesman.

About 4,500 of the total cuts will be in Germany, the newspaper said in an e-mailed summary of an article to be published tomorrow.

Pfeiffer to close its plant in Wilson, laying off 150 workers

Pfeiffer Foods, Wilson’s largest private employer with 150 workers, plans to shut down its plant by the week before Thanksgiving, employees were told Thursday. The facility, which has been in operation since the early 1950s, also plans to reduce its work force to 40 by mid-October.

Pfeiffer is a division of T. Marzetti Co., which essentially is the specialty foods subsidiary of Lancaster Colony Corp., a publicly traded company based in Columbus, Ohio, that makes and sells food, housewares and automotive supplies.

AstraZeneca plans layoffs at Westborough plant

International pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has announced plans to lay off 113 employees at its manufacturing plant in Westborough starting next month.

The job cuts amount to a roughly 10 percent reduction in the England-based AstraZeneca’s entire Massachusetts workforce, which is split between the Westborough plant, located at 50 Otis St., and a research and development facility in Waltham.

Russia’s AvtoVAZ to lay off 36,000 employees

Russia’s largest car maker, AvtoVAZ, plans to lay off 36,000 employees including 5,000 white-collar staff by December 1, following dipping auto sales and mounting losses.

The company, known for its Lada brand cars, recorded a loss of $447 million between January-June 2009 against a net profit of $47 million during the same period last year.

Deere lays off 367 at Harvester Works

MEMC plant closures affect 540 workers

MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. said Tuesday it plans to close its Sherman, Texas, plant and portions of its St. Peters, Mo., plant, affecting 540 employees. A drop in demand for silicon wafers for semiconductor and solar applications have battered MEMC’s sales.

American Apparel to eliminate 1,500 illegal workers

California clothing manufacturer American Apparel will lay off 1,500 workers from its downtown Los Angeles factory because the employees are not legally authorized to work in the United States, the Los Angeles Times reports.

A government inspection two months ago uncovered 1,600 illegal workers and another 200 who had problems with their work records, including, in some cases, faked social security numbers.

BAE Systems lays off 360 workers in Santa Clara, Calif.

BAE systems said Wednesday that it is laying off 360 employees out of about 1,800 at its Coleman Avenue operation in Santa Clara — 20 percent of the workforce. The reduction is due to the Army’s cancellation of the Future Combat Systems Manned Ground Vehicle program, the company said.
