Five staffers in the Chronicle’s classified advertising department, four of them Guild members, agreed to job buyouts last week, according to the union, and “at least one voluntary layoff has been accepted in editorial.

Details of Proposed 20 Percent Business Week Layoffs

Some employees at BusinessWeek magazine were surprised to hear about layoffs proposed in the first quarter of this year — they said they hadn’t heard a thing about it.

According to the information memorandum, 55 of 217 positions are supposed to be eliminated. Of sales, 9 of 69. Of marketing, 6 of 26. Of technology, 8 of 33. Of circulation, just one of 19. And in the “other” category, 6 of 57. That’s a total of 85 eliminations among 421 jobs - about 20 percent - leaving 336 BusinessWeek employees.

New layoffs imminent at SF Chronicle

San Francisco Chronicle management representatives met Friday with the San Francisco Media Workers Guild to discuss the Chronicle’s plans to slash additional jobs through both buyouts and layoffs, Guild officials said in an Aug. 28 statement.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on Thursday that 112 jobs were being cut at the newspaper, just months after its new owner laid off nearly 200 employees.

L.A. Times to take over delivery of Orange County Register

The Los Angeles Times will deliver the Orange County Register to homes and vending machines beginning in September, the two newspapers said Wednesday.
55 full-time and 143 part-time Register circulation and distribution workers would be laid off, and 721 independent contractors who deliver the Register would be affected.

Boston Globe Workers Agree to Cuts

Employees at The Boston Globe voted Monday to accept a package of deep concessions on wages, benefits and job security six weeks after they rejected a similar package, capping a period of labor strife that included a threat by The New York Times Company to close the venerable newspaper.

Job cuts planned for N.Y. Times, Washington Post

New York Times Co. will eliminate 100 jobs on the business side of its flagship paper and cut employee pay by 5% over the next nine months in exchange for 10 days of leave.
The 5% reduction in pay will affect staffers at the Times, the Boston Globe, Boston.com and the company’s corporate unit.

Washington Post said it plans to offer buyouts to employees this year at the paper, affecting workers in its newsroom, production and circulation areas, as well as a small number of positions in the advertising and information-technology departments.

Seattle Paper Shifts Entirely to the Web

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper will produce its last printed edition on Tuesday and become an Internet-only news source, the Hearst Corporation said on Monday, making it by far the largest American newspaper to take that leap.

But the P-I, as it is called, will resemble a local Huffington Post more than a traditional newspaper, with a news staff of about 20 people rather than the 165 it has had, and a site consisting mostly of commentary, advice and links to other news sites, along with some original reporting.

The Gazette Co. in Iowa to cut 100 jobs

The Gazette Co., which includes Gazette Communications, The Gazette newspaper and KCRG-TV, announced that it is eliminating about 100 jobs as part of a companywide reorganization.

In a separate blog, Gazette Editor Steve Buttry said he laid off 13 people Tuesday. The company employed 600 people at the time of last year’s flooding.

San Francisco Chronicle to cut jobs, might close

According to Reuters: “Hearst Corp will lay off a “significant” number of jobs at the money-losing San Francisco Chronicle, and may shut the daily paper if it cannot cut costs within weeks.”

The paper employs 275 news staff. It is unknown how many employees it has in total. The paper is the 12th largest in the United States, according to the U.S. Audit Bureau of Circulations

Los Angeles Times to Cut 300 Jobs, 70 in Newsroom

According to Bloomberg: “Bankrupt Tribune Co.’s Los Angeles Times newspaper will cut about 10 percent of its 3,000 employees, including 70 newsroom positions, as part of a reorganization that includes eliminating a standalone local news section.

Publisher Eddy Hartenstein announced the reductions today in a memo to employees. He didn’t provide specifics on how the job cuts will be implemented or when. “
