G.E. to Add Two New U.S. Plants as Unions Agree on Cost Controls

For the first time in decades, General Electric is adding new operations at two of its manufacturing hubs, underlining what the company says is a new commitment to producing in the United States.
G.E. is building a 350-employee plant in Schenectady, N.Y., to make high-density batteries that will turn many locomotives into diesel-electric hybrids.

GE Moves Green Jobs To China

In the last decade, GE has closed over 15 factories in Ohio and downsized numerous others. Since 1980, employment in GE Lighting has dropped by 68 percent.

A large chunk of that manufacturing has gone to China, and now GE plans to send even more to China in the wake of new clean energy policies.

UK: Wind turbine workers continue occupation at axed plant

(Newport, UK) Workers were last night occupying a wind turbine factory for the sixth day in protest at the imminent closure of the plant.
The Danish owners of Vestas Wind Systems factory say the plant will close ‘within days’, with the loss of 525 jobs, because the UK market for turbines is too small.

Unemployed seek training for ‘green collar’ jobs

With unemployment increasing, community colleges across the country report a surge of unemployed workers enrolling in courses that can train them for “green-collar” jobs.

Students can learn how to install solar panels, repair wind turbines, produce biofuels and do other work related to renewable energy. In order to keep up with the increasing demand, two-year colleges are launching or expanding green job training with money from the federal stimulus package.
