MEMC plant closures affect 540 workers

MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. said Tuesday it plans to close its Sherman, Texas, plant and portions of its St. Peters, Mo., plant, affecting 540 employees. A drop in demand for silicon wafers for semiconductor and solar applications have battered MEMC’s sales.

TTM to Close 2 Plants in California, Laying Off Nearly 350 workers

PCB manufacturer TTM Technologies will close a pair of plants in California and lay off 347 workers because of continued weak demand in North America for PCBs and backplanes. The closures to the company’s plants Los Angeles and Hayward, CA, will put 263 and 84 employees, respectively, out of work. TTM will transfer PCB production from LA facility to other company sites in California, Utah and Wisconsin.

Samsung starts job cuts related to Austin plant renovation

Samsung Austin Semiconductor on Tuesday began to dismiss the first of 552 workers who are to lose their jobs as the company moves to close and renovate its Fab 1 chip factory in Northeast Austin in October.

Cadence Design to cut 5 pct jobs, take charge

Microchip-design software maker Cadence Design Systems Inc (CDNS.O) said it would shed 5 percent of its workforce, or 225 employees, as it targets operating-expense savings of about $30 million.

KLA-Tencor to Cut 10% of Jobs

According to Bloomberg: ” KLA-Tencor Corp., the second- largest U.S. maker of semiconductor equipment, plans to cut about 10 percent of its global workforce as customers pare back orders.

The cuts, on top of a 15 percent reduction announced in November, are aimed at lowering operating costs to between $140 million and $145 million a quarter by the end of the year, the San Jose, California-based company said today in a statement. KLA-Tencor has 5,500 employees”

Agilent Technologies to Cut Another 2,700 Jobs

According to DowJones, WSJ: “Agilent Technologies Inc. (A) shares gained after the company said it is eliminating another 2,700 jobs, its third round of cuts since December, as it tries to cope with huge drops in revenues.

Including 1,400 job cuts previously announced, the scientific instrument maker has now cut about 20% of its global work force and will now restructure two of its three units.”

Advantest Forecasts Loss, Plans Job Cuts

ON Semiconductor to close fourth fab, plans another 350 layoffs

ON Semiconductor Corp has announced it will cut another 350 jobs as it bumps the number of fabs it plans to close up from three to four by the end of Q1 2010 as part of its ongoing cost-reduction effort.

Specifically, ON will close its last Phoenix, AZ fab by the end of Q1 2010 and transfer production from the 6-inch facility to another site within its manufacturing infrastructure. The closure is expected to result in total cash charges of approximately $8 million to $10 million beginning in the current quarter. A savings of approximately $9 million per quarter compared to Q3 is also expected, with the full benefits seen in Q2 2010. ON said approximately 350 jobs at the fab will be eliminated between now and early 2010.

27,000 jobs to go at NEC and Hitachi

According to Guardian News :”NEC and Hitachi, the Japanese electronics makers, will between them cut at least 27,000 jobs worldwide to try to counter falling demand and plummeting prices.”

NEC is aiming for 20,000 or more,” NEC’s president, Kaoru Yano, told a news conference. “It is regrettable that we have to announce such a big downgrade. We must cut waste.

NEC, a major producer of semiconductors, said about half of the job losses would affect full-time employees and that 40% would be in Japan.

Company Info update (NEC): According the the company’s Web site, NEC and its more than 300 subsidiaries employ approximately 150,000. Several of NEC Corp.’s subsidiaries are in Silicon Valley, including Santa Clara-based NEC Electronics America, San Jose-based NEC Tokin America Inc. and Cupertino-based NEC FiberOpTech Inc. NEC Laboratories America has an office in Cupertino.

Chartered Semiconductor to cut 600 jobs

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. said it would cut 600 jobs, about 8% of its global work force, as it swung to a fourth-quarter net loss amid a drop-off in demand and delayed deliveries.

90% of the job cuts announced will be in Singapore, chief executive Chia Song Hwee told BT in a telephone interview.

NEC to cut 20,000 jobs

Japanese electronics giant NEC Corp. said it will cut 20,000 workers worldwide as it tries to stanch widening losses from semiconductors and other businesses that have been hard hit by competition and the global economic slump.

The company hopes the job cuts, which will be split equally between Japan and overseas, will help save 80 billion yen over the next two years.
