The prospect of an in-depth European antitrust review of its acquisition of Sun Microsystems Inc. could add to the challenges Oracle Corp. faces integrating the server, storage and software giant.
The European Commission, the European Union’s competition body, is hesitating on whether to clear the database giant’s $7.4 billion deal to buy Sun or launch a full probe that could take up to four months to complete, according to a person familiar with the authority’s thinking. The commission must decide by the end of Thursday.

According to Forbes: “When titans collide, blood runs. And as rumors circulated Friday that IBM and Sun Microsystems are inching toward a deal to sell the Silicon Valley computing pioneer to Big Blue for close to $7 billion, IT industry watchers began speculating on how the integration would proceed.”
IBM could lay off as much as a third of Sun’s staff to eliminate redundancies–a total of more than 10,000 employees–or the equivalent in combined Sun and IBM job cuts, according to Forrester Research analyst James Staten.

“Sun Microsystems is laying off about 1,500 employees this week in a follow-up to a restructuring plan announced a few months ago, the company confirmed Monday.
The cuts include a portion of Sun’s customer-facing staff, including direct sales and professional services employees, according to a research note from Wedge Partners, a financial analyst company. Such a move would make Sun more reliant on channel partners to sell its products.”

According to Reuters, Yahoo News: “IBM is in talks to buy Sun Microsystems Inc for at least $6.5 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported, in a deal that could bolster their computer server products against rivals such as Hewlett-Packard Co.
That would translate into a premium of about 100 percent over Sun’s Nasdaq closing price Tuesday of $4.97 a share, the paper said, citing people familiar with the matter.”
“Sun stock is down 71 percent in the last 52 weeks, a far cry from an all-time high of $258.75 that it touched during the dot-com boom. The company — which is shedding up to 6,000 jobs, or 18 percent of its workforce — reported a net loss of $209 million for its second quarter ended December 28, compared with year-earlier net profit of $260 million. Revenue fell 11 percent to $3.22 billion.”

Sun Microsystems Inc. officials confirmed Thursday that the networking and storage company has notified 1,300 employees they would be laid off as part of a previously announced workforce reduction.
The reductions stem from a Nov. 14 announcement of “a series of changes designed to align (Sun’s) cost model with the global economy and accelerate the introduction of compelling open source innovations,” spokeswoman Dana Lengkeek said in an e-mail Thursday.
The reductions were made across “all levels,” including vice presidents and directors, she said.
