Sony announces 35 layoffs

Sony DADC announced it will lay off 35 workers from its Terre Haute, Indiana plant. The business currently employs more than 1,400 workers. The layoffs are scheduled to go into effect on Oct. 1.

Aerospace Testing Alliance cuts 132 workers

Aerospace Testing Alliance (ATA), prime contractor at Arnold Center, yesterday notified some of its employees that they will be laid off effective Sept. 25.

The final number was 132 separations of regular, full-time employees, including 47 who volunteered for the layoff for personal reasons; 27 were involuntary and the remainder were retirements or ATA teammate reductions. The reduction included both salaried and hourly employees. ATA has been the operating contractor at AEDC since 2003; the company employs about 2,200 people.

Morgan Research Corp. lays off 140 workers in Central Florida

Nearly 140 jobs are on the line at Morgan Research Corp.’s Orlando defense unit, as contractors spar over an Army contract potentially worth $270 million, the company said Thursday.

Morgan Research, an engineering company based in Huntsville, Ala., issued layoff notices this week to 136 workers in its Central Florida Research Park unit, which performs financial-processing work for the Army’s training-contract agency, also in the park. The layoffs would occur in November.

Raytheon Lays Off Workers in Indianapolis

Raytheon Technical Services Co. LLC of Indianapolis has reduced its work force by 77. Spokesman Gerald Petrie says the workers impacted were manufacturing support and the company is focusing more on engineering. He adds Raytheon hired more than 100 engineers and scientists over the last 12 months in Indianapolis. Approximately 1,200 employees work at the east side facility.

WS Atkins cuts 1,500 jobs

(UK) British engineering consultancy WS Atkins has cut a further 1,500 jobs over the past few months to help cope with tough trading conditions, it said on Wednesday, as it announced plans to appoint a new chairman.

Capgemini to lay off 85 in Dallas

Capgemini Energy LP, which is a venture of TXU Corp. and its subsidiaries and technology outsourcing company Capgemini America Inc., said in a warn letter filed in Austin last week that the company will lay off 85 employees, effective Nov. 1.

The jobs included in the cuts include senior analysts, project managers, test analysts, software engineers and other professional and management positions.

MEMC plant closures affect 540 workers

MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. said Tuesday it plans to close its Sherman, Texas, plant and portions of its St. Peters, Mo., plant, affecting 540 employees. A drop in demand for silicon wafers for semiconductor and solar applications have battered MEMC’s sales.

Microsoft laying off 27 employees in Redmond and Bellevue

Microsoft is laying off 27 employees in Redmond and Bellevue, according to the Washington State Employment Security Department.
The company said in January it was planning to eliminate 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months, while still creating 2,000 to 3,000 new jobs.

BAE Systems lays off 360 workers in Santa Clara, Calif.

BAE systems said Wednesday that it is laying off 360 employees out of about 1,800 at its Coleman Avenue operation in Santa Clara — 20 percent of the workforce. The reduction is due to the Army’s cancellation of the Future Combat Systems Manned Ground Vehicle program, the company said.

EU Could Increase Oracle’s Challenge Integrating Sun Micro

The prospect of an in-depth European antitrust review of its acquisition of Sun Microsystems Inc.  could add to the challenges Oracle Corp. faces integrating the server, storage and software giant.

The European Commission, the European Union’s competition body, is hesitating on whether to clear the database giant’s $7.4 billion deal to buy Sun or launch a full probe that could take up to four months to complete, according to a person familiar with the authority’s thinking. The commission must decide by the end of Thursday.

TTM to Close 2 Plants in California, Laying Off Nearly 350 workers

PCB manufacturer TTM Technologies will close a pair of plants in California and lay off 347 workers because of continued weak demand in North America for PCBs and backplanes. The closures to the company’s plants Los Angeles and Hayward, CA, will put 263 and 84 employees, respectively, out of work. TTM will transfer PCB production from LA facility to other company sites in California, Utah and Wisconsin.

BAE to eliminate 225 local jobs

BAE Systems said Thursday it could cut as many as 225 jobs, or 14 percent of its local work force, this fall because of the slow economy and changes in federal defense priorities that have reduced demand for its commercial aviation and electronics products.

According to leaked copies of the company’s internal “resource action” packages, total verifiable layoffs through Aug. 24 number 9,298.
The company has acknowledged some layoffs, but has steadfastly refused to give details, such as numbers or locations.

Tektronix to move jobs to China

Tektronix Inc., formerly Oregon’s largest homegrown tech company, on Wednesday said it will shift some manufacturing operations from Beaverton to its Shanghai plant through next year.

In its last annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission prior to its acquisition, the company said that as of May 26, 2007, it employed 4,541. Of those, 1,746 were located outside the United States. The company laid off 150 workers in November.

Cisco’s Quarterly Sales Will Drop as Much as 17%, Chambers Says

Cisco Systems Inc., the largest maker of networking equipment, predicted that revenue will drop for a fourth straight quarter as the recession crimps orders of networking equipment. Revenue will fall 15 percent to 17 percent in the fiscal first quarter, which ends in October, the company said today.

Microsoft, Yahoo lay out terms of search ad partnership

Microsoft Corp. agreed to hire no less than 400 Yahoo Inc. employees once the companies’ planned Internet search advertising partnership begins, Yahoo said late Tuesday. In addition, Microsoft agreed to pay Yahoo $150 million over three years to help cover Yahoo’s costs in getting the partnership started, Yahoo disclosed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
