Japan Airlines (JAL) said on Tuesday that it would slash 6,800 jobs and pursue a tie-up with a foreign carrier in a bid to return to profit in the face of severe turbulence unleashed by the global recession.

(UK) Network Rail is planning to cut hundreds more jobs over and above the 1,800 planned cuts it announced at the end of last month.
The network now plans to cut a total of 2,549 jobs. But it said the additional losses included sub-contractors, and did not constitute permanent jobs.

BAE systems said Wednesday that it is laying off 360 employees out of about 1,800 at its Coleman Avenue operation in Santa Clara — 20 percent of the workforce. The reduction is due to the Army’s cancellation of the Future Combat Systems Manned Ground Vehicle program, the company said.

Bay Shipbuilding Co. plans to lay off 405 employees, with additional job cuts possible due to current business conditions.
The layoffs are expected to begin by Oct. 30, according to a mass layoff notice filed Aug. 25 with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

(Canada, N.S.): Only weeks after landing a lucrative contract to build components for the military’s new fleet of helicopters, IMP Aerospace Components is laying off 10 per cent of its workforce.
The Amherst, N.S., company informed the union this week of its plan to cut 30 employees.

For the first time in decades, General Electric is adding new operations at two of its manufacturing hubs, underlining what the company says is a new commitment to producing in the United States.
G.E. is building a 350-employee plant in Schenectady, N.Y., to make high-density batteries that will turn many locomotives into diesel-electric hybrids.

The U.S. Postal Service is considering ways to save money on mail delivery as Americans send less mail and the service loses more money. Among the options under consideration are reducing post office hours, closing some post offices, consolidating processing centers and ending Saturday delivery.

The Los Angeles Times will deliver the Orange County Register to homes and vending machines beginning in September, the two newspapers said Wednesday.
55 full-time and 143 part-time Register circulation and distribution workers would be laid off, and 721 independent contractors who deliver the Register would be affected.

United Airlines said Monday that it plans to cut 600 additional flight attendant jobs, effective Aug. 31, as the carrier struggles with lower-than-anticipated attrition and a steep drop in air travel.
Cuts are in addition to the 1,550 flight attendant positions that United eliminated last year.

Finnish national carrier Finnair Oyj will this week start talks with staff over cost saving plans which could include up to 1,200 job cuts, the company said on Wednesday.
Like other airlines, Finnair has been hit hard in the recession as people fly less. The company has cut capacity and jobs as a result, saying in late April over 6,000 staff were affected by temporary lay-offs alone.
